The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland sponsored a panel Wednesday entitled “Closing the Finance Gap,” to address funding for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Afsaneh was joined on the panel by Paul Kagame (President, Rwanda), Bono (Co-Founder, RED; Co-Founder, ONE), Bill McGlashan (Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, The Rise Fund; Founder and Managing Partner, TPG Growth, TPG Global LLC), Christine Lagarde (Managing Director, IMF), and Rajiv Shah (President, The Rockefeller Foundation).
Drawing on her role as CEO of RockCreek and previous experience as CIO of the World Bank, Afsaneh discussed capital flows and the investment landscape in emerging markets, highlighting the healthcare and edtech sectors. She said that institutional investors have been slow to allocate capital toward SDG investment because they equate impact investing with a lack of returns. Creating a true “impact marketplace,” she said, will require more and better data in order to build credibility and spur progress.
